TITLE: Go in and possess the land - taking hold of your God given possession
Part I - The meek shall inherit the earth
TEXT: Deuteronomy 1:6-8, Matthew 5:1-5
From the beginning of time, God has earmarked the earth as man's domain - as man's inheritance.
In Genesis 1:1, the bible tells us that God created the heavens and the earth. However, from verse two, it seems like the focus shifts to the earth. And except for a few glimpses here and there, we hear very little of heaven until the book of Revelation. Why?
From Genesis 1:2, a major contention for the earth began - which spans the entire bible.
Bible scholars agree that between Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 1:2, the devil and his angels were cast out of heaven. (See Revelation 12:7-12; Isaiah 14:12-15; Ezekiel 28:11-19).
Of all the planets in all the galaxies that exist, the devil headed straight for the earth. Evidently, in the entire universe, there is something different about this planet called the earth. No other planet is impregnated with so much resource. In fact, no other planet is known to be able to sustain life like planet earth.
In Genesis 1:26,28, God expressly gave the dominion of the earth and all that is in it to man. Therefore, as God's children, you and I have an inheritance in the earth. Psalm 115:16.
When God gave man the dominion of the earth, He also, by inference gave him everything that is in it. Psalm 24:1. "The earth is the Lord's and all its fullness".
The word "fullness" in this passage means "the entire contents".
"The earth is the Lord's with all its wealth" - [The Bible in Basic English]
Notice that anything that can be converted to money comes from the earth. Anything that is considered to be wealth is usually in the ground - oil, minerals, precious stones, gold - even agriculture, all come from the earth.
Why did God put so much at man's disposal? Because God expected man to worship Him with everything that he has. Proverbs 3:9,10 says "Honour the Lord with your possessions and with the firstfruits of all your increase".
As a human being, there is a portion of the earth that belongs to you - IT'S YOURS. This speaks of land. But it also speaks of every good thing that the earth has to offer. Psalm 16:5,6
"The measuring line marks out delightful places for me - for me the heritage is superb indeed" - [Jerusalem Bible].
"I have been given a prosperous inheritance - my assigned portion is indeed pleasant to me" - [Harrison Translation]
"You set me up with a house and yard. And then you, made me your heir!" - [Message]
Not too long after God gave dominion of the earth to man, the devil came along and stole it from man. In taking the dominion, he also took the inheritance to the earth with all its wealth.
No wonder when he tempted Jesus, he showed Him all the kingdoms of this world and their glory; and said to Jesus: "… this has been delivered to me and I give it to whomever I wish" Luke 4:5-7
What was the devil really looking for? The same thing he wanted in heaven that led to his eviction. The devil wanted worship.
And up till today, the devil carefully selects the people he gives the kingdoms of this world and their glory to - those who will worship him; directly or indirectly.
But thank God that Jesus came to seek and save that which was lost. Luke19:10.
The devil of course realised that Jesus had the power to take the dominion back from him by the paying price in His shed blood. No wonder, he tried to deceive Jesus into getting the dominion in an illegitimate fashion. But thank God, Jesus went to the cross; thank God He suffered and died. Thank God He shed His blood, thank God He settled the score when He cried, "It is finished!"
Revelation 5:1-10 - By dying and shedding His blood, Jesus qualified to take back the title deed of the earth and deliver it to its rightful owners - you and me.
Verse 10: "And have made us kings and priests to our God; and we shall reign on the earth". Kings reign, priests worship. That's what we have been called to do.
In I Timothy 6:15 and Revelation 17:14, Jesus is described as "King of kings" and "Lords of lords". We are the kings and lords. Every king has a kingdom that he rules over - a "king domain", Today, when a website is established it is given a "domain" name. Every lord has a portion of land over which he has authority, hence the expression "landlord".
There is a domain on the earth that is yours; there is a portion of land that belongs to you.
