ARTICLES ON SPEAKING OUT

DATE:  9 February 2003
SPEAKER:  Pastor Tayo Adeyemi
TITLE:  What in the world have you been saying?
TEXT:  Proverbs 18:21

"Words kill, words give life; they are either poison or fruit - you choose" - Message
"Those who love to talk will suffer the consequences. Men have died for saying the wrong thing" - Living Bible (LB).
"What you say can mean life and death ---" - New Century Version
Growing up as children, when people spoke hurtful words to us, we were taught to minimise their impact by saying: "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never harm me". - Nothing could be further from the truth.
Words carry more than the power to hurt - they literally carry the power of life and death. Genesis Chapter 1 and John Chapter 1 tell us that God created the heavens and the earth by the spoken word. - The spoken word still carries the power to create and the power to destroy. Hebrews 11: 3 "the worlds were framed by the word of God". Your world is also being framed by words.
Today, you are the result of words - your words and other people's words. You have the power to frame your world and create your future by the words, which you speak. We live in a world that is spiritually active, spiritually charged and spiritually polarised. Just like a house is wired up for electricity. - The words that we speak become the switch that either release or cut off the electricity.
In the midst of a world that was dark, chaotic and confused, God spoke. God's word still controls the climate in the spirit realm. - And God wants us to use our words to control the climate in the natural world. - Matthew 16:19 "…whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven". Our words are more far-reaching in their impact than most of us care to admit.
What in the world have you been saying?Whether you're a believer or not, your words have the power to influence. Angels move on account of your words, demons move on account of your words. If only our words could take on form the moment we spoke them and manifest their nature, a lot of us would be more careful what we say. - John 1:14 - "The word became flesh".
But the truth is whether you realise it or not, your words do eventually take on form and manifest. The trouble is, most times, the manifestation is so far removed from the time that we spoke the words, that we actually no longer remember the connection.
Someone once said, "one picture is worth more than 10,000 words". - While there is some truth in that saying, I believe the person who said so has never really read the 23rd Psalm; or the Lord's prayer; or John3: 16; or Winston Churchill's wartime speeches or Lincoln's Gettysburg address or Martin Luther King Junior's address - "I have a dream".
Charles Osgood said, "Compared to the spoken word, a picture is a pitiful thing indeed".
Patrick Henry said "Give me liberty or give me death" and a nation united and fought for their independence".
Winston Churchill said "There will always be an England" and a nation resisted the world's deadliest tyrant with blood, sweat and tears.
Franklin D. Roosevelt said, "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself" and a ray of hope shine through one of the worst depression of all time.
Martin Luther King Jnr said "I have a dream" and today many people who thought they were not allowed to dream are walking in the fulfilment of his dream and theirs.
Rosa Parks said "My feet hurt" and an entire people stood up and marched forward confronting one of the greatest evils of human society.
These are all words that people spoke which have affected the destinies of entire nations.
What in the world have you been saying? It is amazing how careless even we believers have become with our words.
Matthew 12:36 - The word idle in this passage means "lazy", "unemployed", "useless", "barren" and "ineffective".
This means that when we speak, our words must have a purpose - an assignment. Isaiah 55: 10, 11.
We have become so accustomed to talking like the world that we never stop to as:
I. What is the origin of that statement?
II. What is its purpose - what will be the end result of it?
"What a miserable day"; "You lucky devil"; I'm going deaf"; "Oh! I have a terrible memory" and "Oh! I'm a very clumsy person".
Matthew 12: 37 - your words either justify you or condemn you. Words paint pictures. Because we are spirit beings our words are the outflow and tangible expression of our spirit. - Every word you speak is a subliminal instruction.
A study was conducted once amongst people who are physically abusive, and it was found that in every single case the physical abuse had been preceded by verbal abuse.
Words give instruction. - A child is helping with dishes and you say to them "Okay, but be careful, that's my best china - don't break it". - If you had stayed up all night thinking of what to say to make the child break the China you couldn't have come up with a better answer!
You need to be extremely careful what you say to your children, especially when you are angry. You need to consciously erase certain remarks from your vocabulary.
- "You never do anything right"; "You're always late"; "You never listen"; "You'll never amount to anything"; "Stupid!" "You're going to fail again" and "You're just like your father". Now if you want to destroy a child's self image, if you want to make their progress in life an uphill task, if you want to consign them to the failure heaps of life ….. just keep using those remarks on them.
The words we speak in our home create an atmosphere. You can create an atmosphere of faith, liberty, confidence, joy, peace, hope, and success in your home with your words. - By the same token, you can create an atmosphere of fear, tension, hurt, suspicion and resentment by your words. It has been revealed that 80% of all communication in the average home is negative.
What in the world have you been saying?Proverbs 10: 11, 21, 31, 32; Proverbs 12: 14, 18; Proverbs 13: 2, 3; Proverbs 15:4. 90% of the people in our prisons today were repeatedly told by their parents: "you're going to end up in jail".
A major league baseball player in America went to do a prison crusade once with his friend. During the coffee break, he was telling his friend "Over and over, my Dad used to tell me: "you keep throwing like that and you'll end up in major league". You, know today, I am exactly where my dad told me I was going to be". One prisoner standing by who overheard them shook his head and said, "You know the same thing happened to me - I'm exactly where my dad told me I was going to be".
It would be a good idea for families to keep a tape recorder running in their house from time to time, just to find out what in the world they've been saying.
What in the world have you been saying? The Ashanti tribe is the largest tribe in Ghana. Typically, children are named by the day of the week on which they were born. - For instance, Kwesi - born on Sunday means, godly, gentle, peace loving, kind. - It has been discovered that people born on Wednesday commit 50% of the crimes committed in Ghana. - Wednesday children are named Kwaku, which means, violent, mean-spirited, quick tempered and aggressive.
A study was conducted on two Native American Indian Reservations, and it was found that Indian children do not stutter. It was also found that there was no word for "stutter" in the American Indian dialects. - There was no instruction for the children to follow.
In a recent interview that Michael Jackson did, he admitted that his lifestyle of facial plastic surgeries started because of the negative comments about his looks as he was growing up - especially from his father. - He was ridiculed because of his pimples and his nose. His father would say things like, "you've got a fat nose - you didn't get that from me". - He admitted that he felt like dying.
We believers have the power to change the situation in our nation, not only by praying, but also by what we speak. - Proverbs 11: 11.
Your position in life will be affected by what you say and what you allow people to say to you. Matthew 15: 11, 17 - 20. Leviticus 19: 14 - "Do not curse a deaf man". - Why? After all he's deaf and he can't hear you. This is not for his sake but for yours!
How do you change your words?Matthew 12: 34 "Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks". The way we talk is the best indication of the way we think. If we must change our thinking then we must change the input. - You influence a person's thought process by the language you use on them and the language they use on themselves.
Input determines outlook, outlook determines output and output determines outcome/future.
We generally tend to extract the last major input. You will talk about this message more today and this week than you would in the next two years. We simply recall the last deposit. - It tickles me sometimes to think of the conversations that go on around the dinner table at lunchtime on Sundays.
So, watch what the input. Be careful what you say, but also be careful what you let people say to you. People who would never let others dump rubbish in their homes allow people to dump rubbish in their spirits.
